Frequently Asked Questions

My dam is dry. Should I bother making a recording?

Yes, please! We need to know what dry ponds sound like to give a proper comparison with a wet site. Data collected from areas that are dry, don’t have frogs calling or do not receive any environmental water will still help – we will be able to build a bigger picture of the conditions each species prefers.

Can I make a recording without an internet connection?

Yes. You can download the app content before you go out and submit the recordings when you get back in range.

I’m not sure if that’s a frog or a bird? Should I record it?

Yes. The FrogID team will identify the species for us. They will get back to you and let you know if it was a frog or not.

Do I need to be in the exact same spot each time?

No, you don’t have to be. The FrogID app will tell us where you were when you collected the recording.

I can hear frogs calling from a ditch by the side of the road when I drive past, should I record them?

Yes, please (as long as it’s safe to do so)! The more data you collect the better and the more reliable the results will be. We are interested in all frogs in all water bodies at all times.

How often should I make recordings?

As often as you like. If you are making repeat visits to a site to get a picture of changes over time, anything between once a week and once a month is great.

I'm not in northern Victoria. Can I join in anyway?

Yes. Although The Frogs Are Calling You is a project specific to Victoria, the FrogID project is a long-term, Australian wide, citizen science project that you can join from anywhere anytime. Data collected with the app will continue to help inform scientists about frogs, their activity and their habitat.

What is WetMAP?

WetMAP is the Victorian government's Department of the Environment, Land, Water and Planning's programme to monitor the responses of vegetation, waterbirds, frogs and fish to the delivery of water for the environment in Victorian wetlands.

Where can I find more information about Environmental Water?

Check out the Victorian Environmental Water Holder website.
